How does Medifast work?

The clinically proven results of Medifast are based on the use of a structured meal plan featuring Medifast Meals, which are nutritionally designed with a proven combination of protein and carbohydrates, allowing you to successfully lose weight while minimizing loss of muscle. The Medifast Achieve Plan, our standard plan for weight loss, is medically designed to create a calorie deficit, allowing your body to burn fat for energy.

The Medifast Meal Plan is as simple as this:

  • 4 Medifast meals
  • 2 lean and green meals
  • 1 Healthy snack

What is a Medifast Meal?

Almost all Medifast products are “meals” since they contain protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients. There are only a few exceptions: Flavor Infusers?, Medifast Soy Crisps, and Medifast Crackers (Soy Crisps and Crackers are optional snacks). All other Medifast offerings, including shakes, soups, stew, chili, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, fruit drinks, iced teas, hot beverages, bars, puddings, pretzel sticks, and cheese puffs, are Medifast Meals.

Each lean and green meal includes five to seven ounces of lean protein, three servings of vegetables, and up to two servings of healthy fats, depending on your lean protein choices. You may have your lean and green meal for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or in between, whichever you prefer (we told you it’s our most convenient plan ever!).

You can make your own using great-tasting Medifast recipes, which can be found in our cookbook and on our website, or if you are too busy or you don’t like to cook, no problem! Head out to your favorite restaurant armed with our Dining Out Guide or stay in with one of our Medifast Flavors of Home lean and green meals.

Finally, you’ll choose a healthy snack to add to one of your meals. Healthy snack options include a serving of fruit or yogurt, whole wheat pasta or even a baked potato. You can also choose from one of our Medifast Snacks.

What is the average weight loss amount per week?

Results vary. Clients can expect to lose 2-5 lbs per week for the first 2 weeks, and 1-2 lbs per week thereafter on the Medifast 5 & 1™ Plan. The scale isn’t the only test, so check other indicators such as your waistline measurement and how well your clothes are fitting you. Individual results may vary, and are dependent upon various factors such as your starting weight, targeted weight-loss goal, level of exercise, presence of medical conditions, use of medications, accuracy with diet compliance, etc. Medifast suggests that you consult with your physician prior to starting a weight-loss program.

Is Medifast covered by my medical/health insurance?

Weight-loss programs are generally not covered by medical insurance, but please check with both your doctor and your insurance carrier for information relative to your individual circumstances. Some policies may cover weight-loss programs in conjunction with specific medical conditions in which obesity is a factor (such as primary diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or heart disease) and weight loss can lead to management or improvement of these conditions. But again, you will need to ask your doctor and your insurance carrier this question in order to receive an accurate answer based on your coverage and medical status. Medifast does not bill insurance companies on behalf of its customers.

  • Most Insurances are accepted

The REEVUE measures the oxygen that the body consumes. Using this measurement, it calculates a patient’s Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), commonly referred to as a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). Physicians can screen for abnormally low metabolic rates and pinpoint the precise caloric intake required for weight loss, maintenance, or weight gain. Applications include nutritional assessments required to treat obesity as well as obesity related diseases such as metabolic syndrome, sleep disorders, diabetes, and thyroid disorders.

ReeVue by KORR directly measures the concentration of oxygen breathed out by each patient. The patient merely breathes through a simple mouthpiece as all the exhaled air is collected and analyzed. Because there is a direct correlation between oxygen consumed and calories burned (4.813 calories for every milliliter of oxygen consumed), an accurate measurement of oxygen consumption is an effective measurement of calorie consumption.
